If You Are Reading It I am Dead: An Oral History of Duane Puryear’s AIDS Quilt Panel
Associate Director of the Department of Women & Gender Studies will discuss an oral history projecting documenting the life, art, and activism of Dallas resident Duane Puryear, who designed one of the most routinely displayed panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Puryear famously made his own panel for the Quilt, but when the original panel was lost, his family remade it, helping to create a widely circulated work of AIDS activist art. While the AIDS Quilt has not garnered queer critical attention since its last display in 1996, Duane Puryear’s story illustrates how we might use this enormous community art project to excavate local histories of queer activism in response to HIV/AIDS.
